Kitchen Care

A little regular care helps your kitchen stay clean, comfortable and looking its best. Gentle cleaning, prompt attention to spills and protection from excess heat and moisture make a useful everyday routine.

This guide covers general care for kitchen cabinets, fronts and fittings. Always follow the instructions supplied with your particular door finish, worktop, appliance or accessory. A cleaner suitable for one surface may damage another.

Your everyday cleaning routine

  1. Clear and check the surface. Remove loose crumbs and grit gently with a clean, soft cloth before wiping. Use separate cloths for food-preparation areas and dirtier areas such as bins.
  2. Use a gentle solution. Start with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild washing-up liquid, where permitted by the surface manufacturer. Wring out a soft, non-abrasive cloth so it is damp rather than wet.
  3. Wipe with light pressure. Work across the surface, paying attention to handles, door edges and areas around the sink. Avoid flooding joints or leaving water sitting in recesses.
  4. Remove the soap. Wipe again with a separate cloth lightly dampened with clean water.
  5. Dry straight away. Use a clean, soft cloth, including along lower door edges and around joints.

Change dirty cleaning water and wash cloths regularly. For food-contact surfaces that need disinfecting, use a product approved for that surface and follow its dilution, contact-time and rinsing instructions. Never mix cleaning products.

Looking after kitchen doors

Matt and Super Matt finishes: use gentle wiping and remove soap residue before drying. Avoid vigorous rubbing, polishing compounds and furniture wax. If a mark remains, ask for finish-specific advice before trying a stronger product.

High Gloss finishes: make sure the cloth is clean and free from grit. Wipe with light pressure and dry gently. Avoid abrasive pads, powders and scratch-removal compounds unless specifically approved for the finish.

Woodgrain and veneer finishes: check the actual surface specification before choosing a treatment. A wood-like appearance does not establish whether a product should be oiled, waxed or sanded. Use only the care method approved for that finish.

Shaker frames and J Pull recesses: wipe away residue from corners and grip areas with a soft cloth, then dry. Keep pooled water out of joints and recessed details.

Cabinet interiors and shelves

Empty one cupboard at a time so you can clean the base, shelf surfaces and accessible edges. Wipe with a well-wrung cloth and mild cleaning solution, remove residue and dry fully before replacing items. Stand bottles securely and check beneath sink cabinets for drips. Address leaks promptly rather than allowing the cabinet to remain damp.

Worktop care

Laminate: use a soft damp cloth and a mild cleaner approved for laminate. Take particular care around joins, sink cut-outs and edges; remove spills promptly and dry these areas. Avoid steam cleaners, abrasive scourers and harsh chemicals.

Other worktop materials: timber, quartz, natural stone, compact laminate and solid surfaces can have different cleaning and maintenance requirements. Identify the material and follow its own care guide. Do not apply timber oil, stone sealer, acidic cleaner or a stain-removal treatment to an unidentified surface.

  • Use a chopping board for food preparation.
  • Rest hot cookware on a suitable heat-resistant trivet rather than directly on the worktop.
  • Lift heavy items instead of dragging them across the surface.
  • Remove wet cloths and standing water after use.

Managing heat, steam and moisture

Use kitchen extraction while cooking and keep ventilation openings clear. Position kettles and other steam-producing appliances so they do not discharge directly onto cupboard fronts or undersides, while observing the appliance’s required clearances. Follow dishwasher instructions for drying and opening at the end of a cycle. Wipe away condensation and do not hang wet towels over cabinet doors.

Keep steam-cleaning equipment away from cabinets, door fronts, edging and joints. Inspect sink and worktop seals periodically; arrange repair if a seal opens up or water is entering the cabinet below.

Handles, hinges, drawers and storage fittings

Clean handles using the method recommended for their particular metal or coating. Dry them after wiping and avoid transferring aggressive worktop or oven cleaner onto them.

Remove loose debris from accessible drawer areas. If a door drops, a drawer catches or a fitting becomes loose, arrange adjustment before forcing it. Follow the hardware instructions for adjustment and lubrication; do not spray oil or cleaner into soft-close mechanisms without manufacturer approval. Observe the stated load limits for drawers, shelves and pull-out storage.

Sinks, taps and appliances

Rinse and dry sinks and taps after use where practical. Choose cleaners and descalers approved for the specific material or finish, protecting surrounding doors and worktops from splashes. Follow the appliance manual for cleaning filters, seals and internal parts, and switch off appliances as instructed before maintenance.

A simple care schedule

  • After cooking: remove splashes, clean food-preparation surfaces, dry the sink area and wipe up spills.
  • Each week: wipe fronts and handles, clean accessible recesses, and empty and clean bins according to their care instructions.
  • Periodically: clean cupboard interiors, inspect for leaks and loose fittings, and service filters or seals at the intervals specified by the manufacturer.

Stubborn marks or accidental damage?

Stop if cleaning changes the colour, sheen or texture. Avoid improvised abrasive treatments or strong solvents. Contact Abode & Nest with your order details, the range or material, a photograph and a note of any cleaner already used so we can help you identify the appropriate next step.
